Cooking with Nevada Made presents: Infusing Coconut Oil With Kabunky Flowers.

If you’ve never infused your own foods at home, you’re not alone. Many people have wanted to try their hand at infusing foods, but weren’t sure how to do it or where to even begin. Don’t fret, we’re here to show you how!

Before we begin, let’s talk a little about infused foods — more commonly known as Edibles. Edibles have been around for a long, long time. Back in 10th century India, you’ll find Bhang, a basic edible made from ground cannabis flowers, sugar, and water. This simple preparation wasn’t used for its euphoric properties but as a sleep aid and for minor pain relief.

Interestingly, these hundreds of years later, most of the consumers who shop for edibles in dispensaries are doing so for the exact same reasons: for sleep and pain relief. Even more interesting is that nearly half of all people who turn to cannabis stop taking prescription medications.

Modern cannabis has come a long way. We now have professional chefs working in commercial-grade kitchens, producing some of the most clean and potent edibles the world has ever seen. But that doesn’t mean you can’t do the same thing in your home kitchen.

Ready to get started??

The Set Up

Infused coconut oil at home

Infusing coconut oil with flowers only takes a few ingredients and a very basic setup of hardware. You probably have everything you need in your home right now.

Hardware you’ll need:

  • Crock Pot (slow cooker) with low and high temperature settings
  • Cheese cloth or clean dish towel
  • Baking dish
  • Sealed storage container (check out our hack below!)

Ingredient’s you’ll need:

  • Organic Coconut Oil – 14 ounce jar
  • Kabunky Flowers – two, 1/8th-ounce jars – seven grams total

This is all you need to make some of the most potent and flavorful edibles you’re ever going to eat!

Step 1

How to make Infused coconut oil

To start, we need to decarboxylate the flowers. If you read our previous Cooking With Nevada Made blog post, you’ll remember that the THC in cannabis flowers is technically still THC-a, which is non-euphoric. This is why you can’t eat a handful of flowers and get high.

To truly feel the edibles, you must convert the THC-a into THC with heat. This process naturally happens in your pipes, bowls, and bongs when you put the flame to your flowers. But for edibles, we need to gently heat the flowers in a low oven to convert the THC-a to active THC.

Decarboxylate Cannabis flowers

Start by preheating your oven to 220° Fahrenheit. Next, grind your flowers into small, evenly sized pieces. You can use an herb or cannabis grinder, a mortar-and-pistil, a cutting board and knife, or even just your fingers.

Place your ground flowers in an oven-safe baking dish and heat in the oven for 20 minutes. Don’t worry, this will not burn or char your flowers. This low heat converts the THC-a into activated THC, so don’t skip this step!

Convert THC-a into activated THC

After 20 minutes, your flowers are done. That’s decarbing in a nutshell. The heat has converted the THC-a into active THC, bio-available to your digestive system. Isn’t science fun?!?

Step 2

While the flowers are in the oven, you can get your coconut oil and crock pot ready.

We don’t recommend spending a lot of money on your hardware. In fact, if you’ve got a slow cooker at home, use that. Or, you can do like we did and pick up a two-quart slow cooker for about $10 at Walmart.

Place your slow cooker in a safe place and set it to low. Add all of your coconut oil and allow it to come to temperature. The oil will slowly melt into a liquid, which is exactly what we need to steep our flowers.

Now that your flowers are decarbed and your coconut oil is in the slow cooker coming to temperature, you can introduce the flowers to your oil. Simply pour the flowers into the oil and stir to combine well. You want all of the flowers to be submerged in the oil.

Leave that to steep for 4-6 hours on low, stirring occasionally.

It really is that easy!

Step 3

Strain Infused coconut oil

It’s been 4-6 hours and you’re ready to strain, cool, and store your infused oil. Turn off your slow cooker and allow the mixture to cool for 20-30 minutes. It will still be a liquid consistency, which you’ll need to strain out the plant matter, but cool enough to handle.

Place your cheese cloth or clean dish towel over a container large enough to hold all the liquid with plenty of room to spare. You don’t want to overflow the container while straining. Pour the mixture onto the cloth and allow it to drain for a moment. Gently press the mixture with a spatula or spoon to encourage the oil to filter through the cloth. You can also gently squeeze the cloth to wring more of the oil out of the mixture.

**Warning** Cannabis compounds can be absorbed through the skin. Be cautious touching the oil with bare hands. You can use food-safe rubber gloves if you’re concerned about experiencing euphoric effects due to handling.

Once your oil is strained, transfer to a long-term storage container and store in the refrigerator. Clearly mark the container as infused. You don’t want anyone accidentally ingesting infused foods. You don’t need to wash and sanitize your strain jar for storage, but it’s pretty cool, huh?

You’re done. Can you believe how easy that was??

Know Your Dose!

One of the best things about making infused coconut oil with Kabunky Flowers is that you’ll be able to determine the exact dosage of your oil. All Kabunky products are sold with the lab results clearly printed on the packaging. With that information, you can math out the exact dose per ounce of infused oil.

We’re using an eighth of Kabunky Sugar Cookies testing at 19.5% THC, and an eighth of Kabunky #9 testing at 20.48% THC. If you’re using multiple strains with different THC percentages, you need to get the average THC of the total amount of flowers. To do this, add your THC percentages together and divide by the number of strains you’re using. Our numbers look like this:

20.48 + 19.5 = 39.98

39.98 ÷ 2 = 19.99 (this is the average THC for the total amount of flowers)

Now that we know the average THC of our flowers is 19.99%, we can determine what our final dose per ounce of coconut oil will be. You can find plenty of convenient resources online that do the math for you, like this edible conversion calculator. Simply put in the numbers and it does the rest.

Edible dosage Calculator

Based on the lab results of our Kabunky Flowers, we know that there is 20% THC average in the seven grams we started with, giving us 1,400mg. of THC total. If we infuse those seven grams into 14, one-ounce portions of coconut oil, we know that each ounce of oil will contain 100mg. of THC. To be doubly accurate with your dosage, you can weigh the final amount of oil to account for loss during processing.

Armed with these tools, you can begin to tailor your ratios to get the perfect dose per amount. For instance, if you cut the oil in half, you’d have seven ounces that are 200mg. THC each. You get the idea.

Always use lab-tested flowers when making edibles at home. It’s the only way to accurately determine dosage.

Full Spectrum Edibles

Full Spectrum Edibles

So why go to all the trouble of making your own edibles from flower when there’s dozens of edibles on shelves to choose from already?

Well, there are two main reasons for making your own edibles. First, is overall quality. Second is cost efficiency.

Have you ever heard the term ‘full-spectrum edible?’ That refers to the process and starting material the edible was made with. Most commercial edibles are made with distillate, which is a concentrate extracted from cannabis plants. Distillate is a wonderful product, but isn’t full spectrum.

To make distillate, extractors essentially boil away everything that isn’t THC. While this can produce a high-THC finished product, it loses the other cannabis compounds that come together to create what is known as the Entourage Effect. Namely, cannabinoids and terpenes.

The Entourage Effect refers to the reaction our bodies endocannabinoid system has with the whole spectrum of compounds found in cannabis. Here’s a great article explaining the whole thing, and why full-spectrum products give you an overall better cannabis experience.

Using Kabunky flowers lets you extract the full spectrum of cannabinoids and terpenes available in that specific plant, offering you a more well-rounded euphoria.

This specific batch of coconut oil was made from our Sugar Cookies and #9 strains and contains THC, CBD, CBN, Myrcene, Linalool, Caryophyllene, and Humulene. This is full spectrum at its best!

Besides making some of the most effective edibles possible, there’s another reason to prepare them yourself at home — cost savings. Altogether, we were able to infuse this coconut 1,400mg. THC for less than $100! That’s some serious saving if you use edibles regularly.

As you can see, making full spectrum edibles for a fraction of the cost of premade makes a lot of sense. You’ll have a more well-rounded experience, and will save a lot of money.
